| ATV safety tipsATV safety tips Always wear a helmet. The helmet is the unanimous first safety tip from ATV riders and owners. It seems an obvious step, but many ATV-related deaths occur because the rider either forgot to or chose to not put on a helmet. Wear appropriate riding gear. Additional safety equipment includes gloves, goggles, boots that stretch above the ankle, long pants and long sleeves. Take a hands-on safety course. Training courses begin with ATV parts and safety features and include safety techniques. Most are free -- manufacturers reimburse customers for taking classes. Size matters. Children under 6 should never ride an ATV as a driver or passenger. Children 6 to 11 should ride a Y-6 Model ATV, or one that has an engine under 70 cubic centimeters. Twelve- to 15-year-olds should ride a Y-12 Model (70-90 cc engines). Follow a guide on the first ride. On a first-time ride, make sure an experienced rider comes along. That person will know what can and can't be done on the ATV. Ride on a designated ATV trail or park. Ride in a park where the trails are maintained. Don't ride in unmaintained forests or on private property without permission. Follow regulations. Follow government regulations labeled on each ATV. Observe traffic laws: ATVs are permitted to cross roads or highways, not drive on them. Also, it may be obvious, but don't drink and drive. |
