One of the most popular forms of music in the
Democratic Republic of the Congo is
kwassa kwassa, which was invented in the late
1980s and popularized by artists like
Kanda Bongo Man. Kwassa kwassa,
rhumba and
zouk were mixed during the
1980s and
90s, resulting
soukous. Many Congolese musicians moved to
Paris, which became an important source for soukous music; the modern sound has become one of the best-selling genres across the continent.
