The brown algae are a large group of multicellular algae, including various sorts of seaweed, for instance kelp. Their distinctive greenish-brown color comes from the pigment fucoxanthin. They are included among the stramenopiles, together with the golden algae, diatoms, and other such forms. The best known genus is Fucus, which has been used as a source of iodine.
