Athapaskan is the name of a
Native American people, also known as the
Athabasca Indians or
Athabaskes, and of their language family. Tribes that belong to the Athapascan group include the
Apache,
Chipewyan (who are often considered the "true" Athabascas),
Hupa,
Navaho,
Jicarilla,
Kiowa,
Kuchin,
Lipan,
Mescalero,
Sarsi, and
Taculli.
Anthropologists have identified a large group of languages within the Na-Dene language family spoken by peoples throughout the interior of Alaska and the interior of northwestern Canada, in northern California and southern Oregon, and in the American Southwest.
